The Kuklatown Neighborhood
What is it?
The Kuklatown website is an attempt to organize the neighborhood surrounding
the intersection of Junett St and N 33rd St in North Tacoma, with the idea of providing
an enhanced sense of community and increased safety through communication.
The first step is a neighborhood listserv. If there is interest, other features can follow,
such as an online directory.
We are planning to start with the area approximately bounded by North Alder, North 32nd, and North Pine.
How does the listserv work?
Send email to kuklatown@kuklatown.org, and it will be forwarded to everybody on
the list. In order to prevent spam, mail is accepted only from addresses
that are registered.
Everybody in a household can sign up.
On the first day of every month, the listserv will send a reminder, including
your password, and a URL that allows you to make changes in the way you
receive mail, such as digest form.
There is also a searchable archive, so if you remember somebody posting about a
gardener they liked, you can find it.
The archive is private. It requires a password (which you can select when you
sign up) and cannot be indexed by search engines.
What would be appropriate uses?
- Anything of general interest to the community, such as
a proposal for a block party, a concert in Old Town, or a particularly
nice garden
- Safety issues, such as spotting a suspicious person, or unknown car
cruising the neighborhood,
or the report of a break-in
- Requests, such as tips on a carpenter or heating repair
- Notices, such as letting people know you will be out of town and to watch
your house
What would be inappropriate uses?
- Any commercial use, such as advertising one's business
- Forwarding Internet jokes or urban legend
How do I sign up?
Visit
https://mailman3.ferree-clark.org/postorius/lists/kuklatown.kuklatown.org to sign up.
You will receive a response asking for your name and address, in order to confirm eligibility.
The password you choose for the mailing list will also be used for any subsequent features, such as
a neighborhood directory.
Why Kuklatown?
The following plate, taken from Old Tacoma (Images of America)
published by Caroline Gallacci and the Tacoma Historical Society, explains
the origin of the name Kukla Town.
